Sweet Dates in BasraWednesday, November 3, 7:30pm
Jessica Jiji, Sweet Dates in Basra
Book Festival Brochure

Instead of arranging the marriage of their beautiful daughter, Kathmiya Mahmoud, her Arab family decides to send her to work as a servant in the city of Basra.

In this lost Iraq of the 1940’s, she meets Shafiq, a Jewish boy, whose friendship with his Muslim neighbor, Omar, proves that religion is no barrier to friendship. But in a world where loss of honor is punishable by death, the relationship becomes dangerous. When tensions explode between Britain and Iraq, the unbreakable boyhood bond and a new love must overcome the collapsing society.

Set during the years surrounding World War II, this is the redemptive story of two very different cultures.

Come hear Jessica Jiji, daughter of an Iraqi immigrant and a speechwriter for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, give tribute to the lost traditions and cultural harmony of Iraq before WW II.

Larrys KidneyThursday, November 4, 7:30pm
Daniel Asa Rose, Larry’s Kidney
Book Festival Brochure

Organ transplants are not usually the stuff of humor but Larry Feldman’s story of his search for a kidney in China is bizarre, touching and funny. Chinese law forbids transplants to Westerners but being number 74,001 on the American transplant list, he decides to flee American medicine and try for an illegal kidney transplant.

Daniel Asa Rose, the cousin enlisted to assist Mr. Friedman in his attempt to get a kidney and a mail-order bride at the same time, will speak about their journey and the heartbreaking hilarity that ensued. While Mr. Rose was particularly conflicted and will speak about the ethical issues surrounding medical tourism, the crux of this adventure is about family members learning to reconcile in the wake of a life saving procedure in a foreign world. Join us as Mr. Rose also discusses the serious need for organ transplant reform.

Terrorist CopMonday, November 8, 7:30pm
Mordechai Dzikansky,  Terrorist Cop:
The NYPD Jewish Cop who Traveled the world to Stop Terrorists
Book Festival Brochure

You may know about 24’s Jack Bauer, but Mordechai Dzikansky is the real deal.

One day he was catching Torah thieves in New York and on another investigating the murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane. Soon after 9/11, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly enlisted him to travel to Israel where he would learn lessons to help defend New York against further terror.

The constant encounters with blood and gore had the unintended effect of Dzikansky’s descent into his own private hell as a post traumatic stress victim. He initially resisted acknowledging the medical issue, not wanting to give up his mission even though he knew the time had come.

The world’s leading authority on suicide bombings has much to teach us about minimizing terror.

Unfinished BusinessWednesday, November 10, 7:30pm
Lee Kravitz, ...unfinished business...
Book Festival Brochure

After being unexpectedly let go from his position as editor-in-chief of Parade magazine, award winning journalist Lee Kravitz realized his dedication to work had resulted in letting some unfinished business accumulate. Small tasks were now impossible burdens and neglected matters had unintended consequences.

Instead of having a pity party, Lee took fate into his own hands. He put aside his deepest fears and committed a year of living and thinking according to his own timetable, going wherever his unfinished business would take him.

Accompany Lee on his journey as he speaks about reconnecting with others. Hear him discuss friendship, love, family, memory and forgiveness. You may be inspired to address your own unfinished business.

One Marine's Fond Memories of Vietnam
Book Festival Brochure

This Veterans Day come hear Barry Fixler, Rockland County’s 2009 Veteran of the Year, speak about his life, his experiences in Vietnam and how they have influenced his humanitarian efforts.

Barry, a Marine and member of the Jewish War Veterans, believes his religion taught him many lessons he carried into combat with him. Expecting the unexpected and thinking ahead were just two of these. They were especially important when he foiled an attempt to rob his Bardonia jewelry store. He will speak about the Wounded Warriors project and how he uses his business to help collect funds. This Is SoulSunday, November 14, 2:00pm
Marilyn Berger,
This is a Soul
Book Festival Brochure

When Marilyn Berger went to Africa to write about Dr. Rick Hodes she had no idea how profoundly her own life would be affected. Twenty-eight years ago, Dr. Hodes went to Africa to help famine victims. While caring for some of the world’s poorest children he began taking some of them into his home, officially adopting five of them. He has remained in Ethiopia as a single father and Director of JDC’s Medical Programs. His journey from suburban America to Mother Teresa’s clinic in Addis Ababa is not just a story about the savior and the saved, but a celebration of love.

Join us as Ms. Berger, a contributing writer to the NY Times and former diplomatic correspondent for Newsday and the Washington Post, speaks about how she became involved with the story. Her adopted son’s story, intertwined with Dr. Hodes and Ms. Berger’s, is unforgettable in its pathos and subtle humor. It is an exploration of how charity and devotion can actually change lives.

The Kosher BakerMonday, November 15 at 7:30pm
Paula Shoyer,
The Kosher Baker:
160 Dairy-free Recipes from Traditional to Trendy
Book Festival Brochure

Dry, drier, and tasteless: words that are often used to describe kosher desserts. Without access to butter, cream, milk, cheese, yogurt or other dairy, creating a delicious dessert has been a challenge. No longer!

A family member’s job transfer landed author and baker Paula Shoyer, owner of Paula’s Parisian Pastries Cooking School in the Washington, DC area, to Switzerland where, for the first time, she encountered heavenly pastry shops serving delicious parve desserts. She enrolled in cooking school and eventually, slowly and scientifically converted dessert recipes into tasty parve desserts.

Not only are her recipes parve but many in the collection have no-sugar-added, are nut-free, or gluten-free as well as vegan desserts.

Martin Fletcher,
Walking Israel:
A Personal Search for the Soul of a Nation
Book Festival Brochure

As a long-time NBC Bureau Chief in Tel Aviv, Mr. Fletcher has seen war, famine, killings and tragedy. In 2008, he took on a personal assignment: to walk into the soul of a nation instead of walking into war. His outlook was forever changed as he uncovered the complexities of Middle Eastern life while walking the coastline of Israel, similar in size to the Long Island coast.

Seventy percent of Israel’s populations live peacefully, Arabs and Jews, in the coastal plain – you rarely hear about them. Come listen as Mr. Fletcher paints a fascinating portrait of the history of one of the worlds most volatile, challenging, and eclectic regions. The deep emotions and historical insight Mr. Fletcher brings to his talk will have you enthralled. Hear about modern Israel seen from a fresh perspective.
